FAREHAM RIFLE & PISTOL CLUB.
Small Bore Rifle Section.
The Small Bore Rifle is what it says, a rifle with a .22inch bore and into that bore we insert a small cartridge, containing powder and a bullet.
When we fire one of these weapons we describe what happens with Newton ‘s laws of motion. You all know these so they will not be repeated but if you induce something to move fast away from you then there will be movement both ways. When we fire a rifle the bullet leaves the gun very fast but the gun is very heavy so there is very little movement back away from the bullet. Remember the Laws, same pressure both ways in a straight line and only changes by force. The bullet has air pressure, wind, gravity and rain to effect it and the rifle can be moved out of line by trigger finger, forward hand, sling, face pressure and many more. Controlling all this to make the bullet hit the same spot time after time is Rifle Shooting.
For Years the Small Bore Rifle Section has been the same. From the 1930’s we have had a very big rifle section shooting prone at targets and tiles. From 10 members we built up to over 50 in the 40’s & 50’s, and dropped to over 40 in the 60’s & 70’s. Since that time we have had between 20 & 30 members. But there have been changes in what we shoot, tiles have been dropped but may come back again, 3P came in 1981/3 with 3 members shooting but 1983/4 there was only 1 member shooting and this stopped in 1986. Now it came back in 2002/3 with 3 members shooting and this year we have 4 members shooting. What is 3P, it is a competition where the shooter fires at one target standing and one kneeling and one prone.
Fareham Small Bore Rifle Section Report.
As at 17/1/05.
Portsmouth & District Winter League.
We have two teams of eight in this League. One in division one and one in division two. This is a competition that is shot Home & Away to a set programme, so on the 17th Jan I have to take the ‘A’ team to the Railway Rifle Club. All will shoot and the best five in each team will be totalled and the winner will be the one with the highest total. Since October we have won 5 matches and lost two with the ‘A’ team and the ‘B’ team have won 4 & Drawn 1 & lost 3 matches. Most members enjoy this form of shooting as it is shot and you have a result straight after the shoot. Most of the other shooting we do in the Winter is on our own range and the targets are sent away for scoring so it is some time before we know the result. Some take so long to come back that one cannot remember shooting it. Portsmouth & Gosport & Southampton Districts teams shoot for Arthur Lee Cup which we won last year for the first time while I have been with the club which is some 35 years plus. So we hold it at the moment but not for long as we are out of this years competition.
Portsmouth & District Summer Individual League.
This is a competition where all members are listed in average order and are cut into divisions of 10 members, and these 10 members shoot against each other once. I expect to put this years entries in on about 1st April 2005.
Croydon Short-Range Summer League.
This is a competition where you have to put the best averages in the ‘A’ team and the averages are added to get a team value. All teams are listed in value order and are cut into divisions of 6 teams. Your team will shoot against the other 5 teams, twice. I expect to put this years entries in on 14th March 2005. In the winter league the ‘A’ team have won 3 & lost 2 and the ‘B’ team have won 4 & lost 2.
West Kent Short-Range Summer League.
This competition is laid out as per Croydon Above. I expect to put this years entries in on about 18th February 2005. In the Winter League the ‘A’ team have won 4 & drawn 1 & lost 1 and the ‘B’ team have won the first 6 matches.
West Kent Short-Range Handicap Summer league.
Again the list has been cut into divisions of 6 members and they were in any order. You shoot against each member, twice. This is our first time in this competition and if we have read the words right, then each time we shoot we will have our score + the difference between our start average and 100. So you see all are =??? Entries as above.
NSRA Short-Range Summer League.
This will be the same as Croydon above. We expect to put in entries in February. In the winter League the ‘A’ team have won 1 & lost 2 and the ‘B’ team have won the first 3 matches.
NSRA Short Range S&K Summer League.
This will be the same as Croydon above but the shooting is not the same. The shooting above is all prone but this is Standing & Kneeling only, so the prone shooters fire one target per round but S&K shooters shoot two, one of each. We expect to put in entries in February. Our team of three have won the first three rounds out of ten in the Winter League.
Hampshire Small-bore Rifle & Pistol Association.
Hampshire Winter League.
This is the same as Croydon above but there are 8 teams in a division so we have to shoot 14 matches. The ‘A’ team have won 4 & drawn 1 & lost 3 and the ‘B’ team have won 5 & lost 3 and the ‘C’ team have won 3 & lost 5.
Hampshire S & K League.
This is one league of 8 teams, shooting with given points to balance the teams and the teams are Pairs. Our ‘A’ pair has won 7 & lost 1 to our ‘B’ pair. The ‘B’ pair have won 3 & lost 5 matches.
Comments.
We are starting the second half of the winter leagues. So we have shot all the Individual cards that needed to be done, and we have been KO from most of the KO competitions, so we are over the hump and coasting. But at one time it did look as if we would never make it. So now we can look to summer shooting and a slower pace of life. When we start of the summer shooting it can be slow in the club, because some take a holiday and go boating or 50mtr & 100yards shooting outside, or Full Bore shooting all summer. So the club room in summer can feel dead but if you want to learn to shoot or need to sort things out, there are people to help you in the summer.
Good Shooting from your Rifle Captain.
