FULL BORE SECTION
What is "Full Bore" Rifle? - Basically any rifle that is not a .22 rimfire ("Smallbore" - as used by the Prone and Light Weight Sports Rifle Section) or a (conventional) Air rifle. These Rifles range from older military types (the classic Lee Enfield etc) through to the dedicated target shooting rifles accurate at 1000 yards to sophisticated sporting rifles complete with high magnification telescopic sights. the definition also includes "Gallery Rifles" - Typically Winchester and similar type rifles, normally in lower power pistol calibres.
Why a separate section? - At the club ranges we are restricted to .22 rimfire and air for range certification/safety reasons. For this reason, those of us with an interest in using the larger calibre rifles have formed a section that shoots at Bisley (and other approved ranges from time to time).
Twice a year we hold our club full-bore competitions, the winter one at 100yds, the summer one at 200yds. All competitors use the clubs 7.62 target rifle to make things as fair as possible. The standards are quite high, and the scores close.
Our Bisley shoots are not confined to full bore rifles only, .22 rimfire performs very well out to 200yds, as do many muzzle loading rifles and gallery rifles. Any full or probationary member can come along, as can (by arrangement) any member of another rifle club who holds an FAC.
We have already hired one of the NRA's new Ruger Mini 14 BOA rifles - these are great fun and due to their light weight and minimal recoil (not too much more than a .22 rimfire) they are ideal for those of lighter build.
The club has .38 cal gallery rifles - a copy of an 1892 Winchester rifle - this can be used on the ranges at Bisley or more locally at Havant, by arrangement. At 100 yards, with very basic sights, the accuracy is surprising with groups better than 10 inches in diameter being possible. This rifle is also available for members to use in competition.
The Short Siberia range is booked for every second Sunday (except July) until December roughly alternating between 100 and 200 yards.
